Gvalda Anouk, who haunts the book, peeking out of corners where you didn’t expect her to be. I love Gavalda’s books but so far this is the one. I don’t know for sure One word to define this book: Comment la vie d’un homme peut basculer, comment peut-il s’en relever.

Charles, while reasonably likeable, did not grab me as the central protagonist, and the sudden shift into bucolic fantasy in the last third of the book felt so whimsical that it was ridiculous.
